Dahua vs Hikvision: which is better for home or business?

The two Chinese brands that dominate the global CCTV market. Both are good. But they are not the same: different technologies, different ecosystems, and each fits certain situations better than the other. Here is an honest comparison from people who install both on the Costa del Sol.

The short answer

For a home or small business: Dahua is our first choice. Better value for money in the mid range, a simpler app, and real AI without needing to go premium.
For a company or large installation: Hikvision. More models with AI as standard, more complete professional software, and a more robust VMS platform (HikCentral).
At Dartel we install both. If you are not sure which one suits your situation, we can tell you in two minutes.

Who are Dahua and Hikvision?

Both companies are Chinese, founded in Hangzhou (Zhejiang), and have been manufacturing CCTV equipment for over 20 years. Together they account for more than half of the global CCTV market. In Spain both have official distribution with Spanish-language technical support, localised documentation, and warranty handled without international paperwork. At Dartel we work with official Spanish distributors for both brands.

The idea that "they are all the same" is widespread and wrong. They share an origin and compete in the same segment, but their technological approaches, software, and ecosystems are different — and those differences matter depending on what you need.

Colour night vision: Dahua Full-color vs Hikvision ColorVu

The feature customers ask about most: seeing in colour at night, without infrared.

Dahua calls it Full-color (and Starlight in earlier versions). Their mid-range cameras already include a white LED that activates in low light, producing a colour image with good sharpness. The result looks warm and natural.

Hikvision calls it ColorVu, and in 2025 launched version 3.0 with new-generation sensors, an F1.0 aperture, and an AI-powered image processor (HikAI-ISP) that delivers colour images in very low ambient light — virtually in complete darkness. Version 3.0 also adds Smart Hybrid Light: the camera automatically alternates between warm white light and infrared depending on the environment, minimising light pollution.

For home use or a small shop, both work well and the difference is not noticeable day to day. For very dark outdoor areas or demanding installations, Hikvision ColorVu 3.0 holds a technical advantage in the professional range.

Smart detection: WizSense (Dahua) vs AcuSense (Hikvision)

False alarms are the biggest problem with any security system: a neighbour's cat, a falling leaf, headlights from a passing car. Both brands solve this with AI that distinguishes people and vehicles from everything else.

Dahua WizSense

WizSense uses a dedicated AI chip with deep learning. Its SMD 4.0 function (Smart Motion Detection) filters not only small objects but also large animals that used to trigger false alarms in earlier versions. Its AI Coding also allocates more compression resources to areas containing people or vehicles, saving up to 50% of storage compared to standard H.265.

For more advanced projects there is WizMind: facial recognition, people counting, heat maps, and more detailed scene analysis.

Hikvision AcuSense

AcuSense classifies detected objects into three categories: people, vehicles, and "other". Hikvision claims accuracy above 98%, and the feature is enabled by default with no extra configuration needed. In 2025, AcuSense 3.0 added AcuSearch, which lets you search the recorder by image with a single click to find a specific event instantly.

For enterprise applications, Hikvision offers DeepinView (cameras with advanced embedded AI) and DeepinMind (NVRs with native server-side AI processing).

For 95% of users, WizSense and AcuSense are functionally equivalent. The difference shows up in large projects that need advanced analytics or integration with VMS platforms.

Mobile apps: DMSS vs Hik-Connect

Both let you watch live footage, review recordings, receive alerts, and manage the system from your phone. No technical setup needed — just scan a QR code on the recorder.

DMSS (Dahua) stands out for its clean interface and quick setup. Adding an NVR takes under two minutes from scratch. The learning curve is low, which makes it ideal for end users with no experience of security systems.

Hik-Connect (Hikvision) is slightly more complex to set up initially, but gives more control over AI parameters and notifications directly from your phone. For users who want to fine-tune how the system behaves, it has the edge.

For large installations, Hikvision adds iVMS-4200 (desktop client, supports several hundred cameras) and HikCentral (enterprise VMS platform with access control integration). Dahua has DSS/PSS for the same purpose — functional, but with less of a track record on very large projects.

ONVIF compatibility: both brands are compatible with the ONVIF standard, which allows cameras from one brand to connect to recorders from another. However, advanced features — AI, two-way audio, smart events — only work fully when cameras and recorder are from the same brand. To get the most out of your system, mixing brands is not recommended.

Price: which is cheaper?

In the entry and mid range, Dahua is typically 10 to 20% cheaper than the equivalent Hikvision model. At the high end the gap narrows and in some segments disappears entirely.

Hikvision has the HiWatch range (more affordable models aimed at small and medium installations) that competes directly with Dahua's mid range. It is important to compare equivalent models, not brands in the abstract.

The price difference does not always make Dahua the better choice: in installations where professional software stability and VMS compatibility matter, the extra cost of Hikvision can make economic sense over the long term.

Support in Spain

Both brands have official Spanish distribution, Spanish-language technical support, localised documentation, and warranty managed without going through China. In practice, the quality of support depends heavily on the specific distributor.

At Dartel we work with official distributors in Spain for both brands. That means we can resolve issues directly with the distributor, without long email chains or weeks of waiting.

The budget range: HiWatch (Hikvision)

Hikvision has a more affordable product line with its own name:

HiWatch is Hikvision's economy range for small and medium installations. It is still a professional product (uses the Hik-Connect app, compatible with iVMS) but at a lower price point. It is a solid option when budget is the priority but you still want the reliability of the Hikvision ecosystem.

Which one to choose for your situation?

  • Private home: Dahua. Better price, simpler app for everyday use, real AI without needing the premium tier. At Dartel we routinely install it in houses across the Costa del Sol.
  • Shop or small office (up to 8–12 cameras): either brand works well. Dahua if the budget is tight; Hikvision if you want room to grow or to integrate other systems.
  • Business, warehouse, car park, or installation with more than 12 cameras: Hikvision. The professional software (iVMS-4200, HikCentral), the wider range of AI-enabled models, and the compatibility with access control systems justify the price.
  • DIY installation without a technician: for something very basic indoors there are easy-to-install WiFi cameras. For any outdoor or permanent installation, the right move is to call us.
