Part of the Costa del Sol security guide
A flat is not protected the same way as a villa
In Fuengirola the typical home is not a detached house with a garden but an apartment in a shared building: a flat in a block, often near the sea, with an entrance hall, a garage and shared communal areas. That completely changes where the risk sits and what is worth installing.
In a villa the work starts at the perimeter: the fence, the garden, the wide access points. A flat has no perimeter of its own; the weak point is the front door and any accessible windows or balcony doors (above all on ground and first floors). And there is a second layer that barely exists in a villa: what happens in the building's communal areas, which do not depend on you alone. The upside of a flat is clear: it can be protected very well without chasing walls or running cables — which matters all the more if the home is a rental or you would rather not touch the finish.
A 100% wireless alarm: the answer for a flat, with no works
This is the point that weighs most in an apartment. The Ajax system is entirely wireless: the hub and sensors stick or screw on without breaking anything — no chasing, no cables on show. For a flat — and especially a rental flat or a second home — it is the difference between being able to install today or never installing at all:
- No works and no community approval needed: since everything sits inside your own home, you do not need the owners' association to agree before fitting an alarm. The installation leaves no marks and, if you ever move, the equipment is yours and goes with you.
- Door and balcony doors first: an opening sensor on the front door and on accessible balcony or window doors covers exactly where someone would actually get into a flat.
- Movement inside: a motion detector in the living room or hallway protects the interior even if someone forces a point you did not expect.
- Control by keypad, key fob or app: arm and disarm with a key fob, a keypad or your phone — whatever suits you best.
For an average apartment, a few well-chosen pieces are enough. We tell you exactly which ones yours needs, without overselling.
Ajax alarm, no monthly fees: the equipment is yours
We recommend Ajax for a reason that fits owners of a flat here who live abroad part of the year perfectly: it does not tie you to anyone. You buy the equipment once, it is yours forever, and there is no mandatory monthly fee and no lock-in. None of those €40–55-a-month deals running for years with hardware that is not even yours.
It is a professional wireless system (encrypted protocol, European EN 50131 certification) with a hub that withstands power and internet cuts: if the building's fibre goes down, it switches to 4G mobile data; if the power is cut, the internal battery keeps the system running. For a flat that spends time empty, that resilience genuinely matters. If you also want 24/7 professional monitoring connected to an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC), you can add it separately — but that is your choice, not a condition set by the manufacturer.
If you want to understand Ajax and its components in depth, we cover it here: the complete guide to the Ajax alarm with no monthly fees. You can also see the equipment in the Ajax alarms category in our shop.
Video door entry: see who is calling without going down to the entrance
In a flat, a video door entry unit is a piece you barely need in a villa and that here solves everyday life. It lets you see who is at the building entrance or your door before you open, and do it from the screen or from your phone:
- See and speak with whoever calls without opening blind: a courier, a neighbour, someone claiming to be from a company.
- Open remotely when you want: to let in the cleaner, a relative or whoever manages your rental.
- Answer even when you are not home: with connected models, the door call reaches your phone wherever you are, so an empty flat looks attended.
It is especially handy if you receive parcels often or if your flat is a holiday let with guests coming and going. You can see the models in the video door entry category.
Cameras in a flat: door and terrace, not garden
In an apartment it is not about covering a garden, but about a few well-chosen points. We sell and install leading brands (Dahua, Hikvision), and in a flat what usually makes sense is:
- The front door: a camera, or a video door unit with a camera, that records who reaches your door. On the landing and other communal areas you have to work with the community (more on that below).
- The terrace or balcony: the other real access point of many flats, especially on ground floors and penthouses. A well-aimed outdoor camera deters and keeps a record.
- Real night vision: a large share of incidents happen after dark; some ranges deliver a colour image even with very little light.
- Smart alerts: modern cameras tell a person apart from a moving plant or a bird, which dramatically cuts pointless alerts while you are away.
To choose the right one for your home, these two guides help: how to choose a security camera and how many cameras you need at home. And here is the catalogue: security cameras.
Seafront and salt: gear that stands up to the sea
Many Fuengirola apartments are right on the seafront or a step from the promenade, and there the marine air is hard on equipment: salt corrodes housings, screws and contacts faster than people imagine. It is not a minor detail — it is what decides whether an outdoor camera or siren lasts years or fails in a single season.
That is why, on the seafront, we choose gear built for the outdoors (a good level of protection against water and dust, sturdy housings) and fit it sheltered from direct exposure wherever we can. It is one of the reasons it is worth having it installed by someone who knows the area, rather than improvising with the first cheap unit.
Security in a community building
In a flat there is a clear boundary: what is inside your home is your call (your alarm, your video door unit, your cameras pointing at your door or terrace); what happens in the communal areas — entrance hall, garage, pool, corridors, lift — is a matter for the community, not for one owner acting alone.
- Cameras in communal areas = the community's decision. Putting cameras in the garage or entrance hall is a building project: the owners' meeting approves it and it must comply with the GDPR (information sign, recording only what is necessary, safekeeping of the footage). A single owner cannot install it on their own pointing at shared space.
- Your cameras, only what is yours. A camera at your door or terrace should point at your home and your access, not the landing, the neighbour's door or the promenade. When we plan it, we guide you so it complies from day one.
- Sign and private use. Where you record, there must be a visible sign that the area is under video surveillance (we provide it), and the footage is for your security and, if needed, for the police — not to publish.
If your community is thinking about cameras for the communal areas, access control in the garage or an alarm for the building, that is a separate project we also do: see it in our services and we will look at it with the owners' committee.
The flat that sits empty between seasons
It is the most common case in Fuengirola: the second home used for a few months, or the holiday-let flat that changes hands. The technology is designed for exactly that, and it is all controlled from an app on your phone, from any country with internet:
- Watch the flat live from your phone, at any hour, for peace of mind.
- Instant alerts: if the alarm detects an opening or movement, you get a notification within seconds; with compatible cameras, also with an image so you can tell a real intrusion from a false alarm on the spot.
- Arm and disarm remotely: is the cleaner, a relative or your rental guest arriving while you are away? Disarm from your phone and arm it again when they leave, with no keys or physical codes left with anyone.
- Reviewable recording in case you need to check what happened at a specific time.
The app is available in several languages, so you can use it comfortably even if you do not speak Spanish.
Areas of Fuengirola where we install
We work across the whole of Fuengirola and its surroundings, and we know the type of home in each area — which shapes where each sensor and camera goes:
- Los Boliches and Torreblanca: very much flat-and-community areas, with a strong presence of foreign residents and seasonally used homes.
- El Higuerón (Reserva del Higuerón): modern high-rise apartments with a pool, garage and shared areas that call for well-planned coverage.
- Carvajal and the beach area: beachfront apartments, many second homes or holiday lets, with the added challenge of the sea salt.
- Town centre and promenade: flats in shared buildings, where a wireless alarm, a video door unit and good door-and-balcony protection solve security with no building works.
We support you in your language
We know that many Fuengirola owners do not have Spanish as their first language. At Dartel we support you in Spanish, English, Russian and Ukrainian: from the first enquiry and quote through to installation, app setup and any question afterwards. There is no language barrier to protecting your flat or to understanding exactly what is being installed and why.
Our website, shop and online assistant also work in your four languages, so you can get informed and request a quote without relying on a translator.
How the installation works
With 15 years of experience behind us, the process is designed to be convenient even if you do not live here all year round:
- 1. We talk. You tell us about your flat (floor, terrace, whether it is a rental or sits closed between seasons) by WhatsApp, phone or email, in your language. If needed, we visit to see it.
- 2. A clear quote. We prepare a no-obligation quote with the exact equipment your apartment needs. No hidden fees.
- 3. We sell and install, with guarantee. We fit the alarm, video door unit and cameras, set up the app on your phone and show you how to use it. The guarantee covers both the equipment and the work. Where applicable, we certify any network cabling (Cat6) that we install.
- 4. Support afterwards. We stay available for any adjustment or question, including while you are outside Spain.

Frequently asked questions
Can I install an alarm in a rented flat with no works and no community approval?
Yes. The Ajax system is 100% wireless: the hub and sensors stick or screw on with no chasing and no cables on show, and since everything sits inside your own home you do not need the owners' association to agree. The installation leaves no marks and, if you move, the equipment is yours and goes with you.
Does the Ajax alarm have a compulsory monthly fee?
No. You buy the equipment once and it is yours for good, with no compulsory monthly fee and no lock-in. If you want 24/7 professional monitoring connected to an Alarm Receiving Centre you can add it separately, but it is optional, not a condition set by the manufacturer.
Can I put cameras in my building's garage or entrance hall?
Communal areas (garage, entrance hall, pool, corridors) are the community's decision: the owners' meeting approves it and it must comply with the GDPR, with an information sign and recording only what is necessary. Your own cameras may only cover your home and your access, such as your door or terrace, never the landing or a neighbour's door.
My apartment is on the seafront. Does the salt damage the cameras?
Marine air corrodes housings, screws and contacts faster than usual. That is why on the seafront we use gear built for the outdoors, with a good level of protection against water and dust, and fit it sheltered from direct exposure wherever we can, so it lasts years instead of failing in a single season.
My flat sits empty part of the year. Can I watch it from abroad?
Yes. Everything is controlled from an app on your phone, from any country with internet: you watch the flat live, get an alert within seconds if there is an opening or movement, and can arm or disarm remotely, for example to let in the cleaner or a guest. The app is available in several languages.
Which languages do you support in Fuengirola?
