What is the best outdoor camera with no monthly fee?

The one that records in your house, not in somebody else’s cloud. Here are the concrete requirements, the difference between the ranges we install, and why a badly installed camera ends up open to the internet.

A Dahua or Hikvision IP camera that records locally, to a recorder or a memory card, powered over PoE, rated IP66 or better, with night vision. There is no fee because the footage never goes to a paid cloud. For a home with lighter needs, Imou (Dahua's consumer brand) also records locally. The best camera is the one that is installed properly: your own password, current firmware and no ports opened to the internet.

Why "no fee", and why does it matter where it records?

Many consumer cameras only store video in the manufacturer's cloud and charge for it. A professional camera records to a recorder in your home: the footage is yours, it does not depend on someone else's server and there is no monthly bill. Cloud stays an option, not an obligation.

What should an outdoor camera have?

  • Local recording: a 4- or 8-channel NVR, or a microSD card in the camera itself for one or two units.
  • PoE: one network cable carries data and power. Fewer boxes, fewer failures.
  • IP66 or IP67: rain, dust and Costa del Sol sun.
  • Night vision, infrared or colour with its own light, depending on the spot.
  • 4 MP or more to recognise a face or a number plate inside your plot.
  • People and vehicle detection, so it does not alert you every time a cat walks past.
  • The manufacturer's official app for viewing on your phone with no open ports on the router.

Dahua, Hikvision or Imou?

Dahua and Hikvision are the two professional ranges we install most; the differences are in the app and the specific models, not in the underlying quality. Is it safe to have a camera connected to the internet?

Yes, if it is installed properly; no, if it is left the way it came out of the box. A BitSight report from June 2025, picked up by 404 Media, counted more than 40,000 cameras reachable from any web browser, with no hacking involved: factory password, open ports or outdated firmware.

Hikvision and Dahua have had serious flaws, long since patched — CVE-2021-36260 and CVE-2021-33044 — that are still being exploited on cameras nobody updated. And in 2016 the Mirai botnet infected around 600,000 connected devices, cameras and recorders among them, still using the factory password.

We sell both brands and would rather tell you this ourselves. So on every install: a password you chose, updated firmware, no open ports and access through the official app.

Can it record the street?

No. Only your property, with a visible sign. The Spanish data protection agency's video-surveillance guide sets out that security cameras cannot capture the public road beyond the minimum strictly necessary.
