Part of the Costa del Sol security guide
The short answer
An Ajax alarm can switch on lights, turn sockets on and off, open a gate and shut off the water using devices from the same brand. They run on the alarm's own radio, with no Wi-Fi and no second hub, and you control them from the same app. What turns these devices into home automation is scenarios: rules along the lines of "if the leak detector goes off, shut off the water". It covers the basics of a home. For climate control or zoned irrigation you need a separate home automation system.
Which device does what
| You want to | Device | How it works | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Control a lamp or appliance with no building work | Socket | Plug between the wall and the appliance | Up to 2.5 kW, indoors |
| Run garden lights, a pump or irrigation | WallSwitch | Flush-mounted relay that supplies power | Up to 3 kW. Fitted by a professional |
| Open the gate or garage | Relay | Dry contact that acts as a push button | Supplies no power: it only triggers the motor |
| Control a light at the switch and in the app | LightCore | Fits in the switch box, no neutral needed | 230 V. Models vary by number of lights |
| Know if there is a leak | LeaksProtect | Sits on the floor and alerts your phone | It alerts you, but does not shut off the water |
| Shut off the water | WaterStop | Solenoid valve on the pipe | A plumbing job, indoors |
The scenarios worth setting up
A scenario is a rule the hub carries out by itself. It can be triggered by an alarm, a schedule, arming or disarming, a button or temperature. These are the most useful:
- Water leak. If a LeaksProtect goes off, the WaterStop shuts off the water. This is the scenario that makes most sense in a home that stands empty for long periods.
- Leaving home. When you arm the alarm, the lights and sockets you choose switch off, such as the one for the heater.
- Garden light. If an outdoor detector goes off at night, the outside light comes on.
- Simulating presence. On a schedule, a lamp comes on at dusk and goes off later.
- Gate at the touch of a button. A Button or your phone triggers the Relay, with no need to open another manufacturer's app.
How many scenarios each hub allows
This is the figure most people overlook when buying. According to Ajax's documentation, the basic Hub allows 5, the Hub 2 allows 32 and the Hub 2 Plus allows 64. If you plan to automate more than a couple of things, the basic Hub falls short.
| Hub | Scenarios |
|---|---|
| Hub | 5 |
| Hub 2 | 32 |
| Hub 2 Plus | 64 |
If it is a second home, where to start
- The water. LeaksProtect next to the washing machine, dishwasher and water heater, and WaterStop on the mains supply. A leak in an empty house is one of the most expensive kinds of damage.
- The lights. A lamp on a Socket with a schedule. No building work needed.
- The garage or gate. A Relay so you can let in whoever looks after the house without giving them a remote.
Where the limit is
Ajax is a security system with automation features, not a complete smart home. It switches on, switches off and reacts. If you want room-by-room climate control, zoned irrigation or shutters with scenes, we set that up with dedicated home automation and link it to the alarm. Two practical warnings: do not plug anything into a Socket that should not be switched on remotely with nobody there, and check the power rating before choosing the device.
Frequently asked questions
Can you do home automation with an Ajax alarm?
Yes, the basics: lights, sockets, gate and water shut-off with devices from the same brand, from the same app. For climate control or zoned irrigation you need a separate home automation system.
Do Ajax sockets need Wi-Fi?
No. The Socket talks to the hub over the alarm's radio, with no Wi-Fi.
Can I open the garage door from my phone with Ajax?
Yes, with a Relay connected to the motor's push button. First you need to check on the motor's control board how it connects.
Does Ajax shut off the water by itself if there is a leak?
Yes, with a LeaksProtect detector and a WaterStop valve linked by a scenario. The detector alone shuts nothing off: it only alerts you.
How many scenarios does an Ajax alarm allow?
According to Ajax, 5 on the basic Hub, 32 on the Hub 2 and 64 on the Hub 2 Plus.
Does LightCore need a neutral wire?
No, it works at 230 V without a neutral, which is what older houses often lack.
